How One Guy Made It Big Doing What He Loves

This is the beginning of another series. It is all about real people who have, for one reason or another, changed their lives by doing what they love. And come out doing okay. Some doing very, very okay.

Meet Glen Halliday of Kids Crooked House (You may have seen some of his great work on Jon & Kate Plus Eight)

———-

How long have you been doing this?

If the question refers to being an entrepreneur, I’d say my entire life. Raking leaves, shoveling a walkway for $1.00 were all jobs I started when I was 9 years old. I was always my dream to be my own boss. Later in life, after getting a degree in visual communications (a fancy name for a graphic designer), I would freelance for various companies under the name “Glen Halliday Design” designing logos, collateral, websites, and so on. My current company, Kids Crooked House,  is a great mix of everything I love. I get to be very creative, work with my hands and build, but also surround myself with people I enjoy working with.

How did you get the idea to do it?

Like most success stories, Kids Crooked House happened Read the rest of this entry »

Save Money on Medical and Dental

I recently went to a new dentist and discovered I need a lot of work done including a one-tooth bridge and a crown. They printed up a fancy, detailed estimate of what it would cost and what my portion would be.

(It could have been a travel itinerary to Paris from the looks of the amounts.)

I was devastated.

More than $4,800.

Now, I’m in pain and I don’t have anywhere near that much money.

They did the cleanings and X-rays and stuff that my insurance would pay for.

And then I got a  letter from my insurance company. It seems this dentist is not “in network” so he charges whatever he wants.  When I made the appointment with them I had asked the wrong question. I asked if they accepted my insurance, not if they were “in network.”

I called my insurance company and they gave me the allowables for the charges for an in-network dentist.

By switching dentists (and there are 14 in my immediate area) I will save approx. $2,800 “out of my pocket”!

Big difference.

My advice? Ask the right question.

This is the fifth in a series of brief tidbits of ideas that will hopefully help you if you need to create more money in your life.

If you enjoy people, having a good time or just chatting, here are some ideas for you to make some extra money.

Performer. This could be anything from being a clown to a magician to a DJ. If you have a talent (e.g. harpist or singing) these are definitely marketable. If you have a little talent and a good sense of humor you can turn an act from musical to comedy (e.g. The Smother’s Brothers.)

Weekend bartender. This requires some education but can be quite profitable.

Elder companion. Services for the elderly are growing by leaps and bounds. Some families just need someone to stay with their family member for a few hours while they shop, go to the doctor, or have a much needed break.

Tour Guide: Most of us live in interesting areas because we live in areas with histories. Become an expert and conduct walking tours of a special area in your community.

Teach: Teach something you have a passion for. Your enthusiasm will gain you a great reputation and your teaching opportunities will grow.

Provide entertainment for birthday parties--for young and old. Research this subject and see what’s being done. Put a new twist on it and your phone will ring!

NOW HERE’S ONE OF MY FAVORITE FUNNIES:

I saw a woman wearing a sweat shirt with ‘Guess’ on it.
So I said ‘Implants?’

She hit me.

More Money: How to Make More Money if You Are Good with Animals and Pets

This is the fourth in a series of brief tidbits of ideas that will hopefully help you if you need to create more money in your life. Working with animals and pets is a favorite choice for many people but many of us just don’t know where to start or if it really works. Here are some fun ideas that really do work:

1. Pet sitting. Make sure your guest pets have their appropriate shots and you must have adequate space and facilities for this service to be practical.hippo-pool-tanzania-xl

2. Make your pets a star! Learn how to train your dog or cat or chicken or pig…to perform. The ASPCA has great information on how to begin.

3. Mobile bathing services–becoming a hotter business all the time.

4. Fashion hairdo’s and custom clothing for dogs.

Check out these great resources:

Best of luck. PLEASE SHARE HOW YOU ARE DOING.
