MONEY AND DEBT PROBLEMS? SUICIDE IS NOT THE ANSWER

The morning hug

There are a lot of reasons to despair. But not money. Especially not to the degree that you should contemplate suicide. Here’s ten reasons why:

  1. Money is fluid. It comes and go. A dear friend of mine lost her mother to suicide. Her mother was overwhelmed with financial problems. In just a few weeks after her death her financial situation would have improved. My friend grew up without a mother and suffered immensely her entire life. There is nothing more constant than change.
  2. In the United States we no longer have debtor’s prisons. If we cannot handle our financial burdens we have a legal recourse: bankruptcy. The day of your bankruptcy I guarantee you that the world will continue to spin, the sun will warm the Earth, and you will survive.
  3. You will be Read the rest of this entry »

How One Guy Made It Big Doing What He Loves

This is the beginning of another series. It is all about real people who have, for one reason or another, changed their lives by doing what they love. And come out doing okay. Some doing very, very okay.

Meet Glen Halliday of Kids Crooked House (You may have seen some of his great work on Jon & Kate Plus Eight)

———-

How long have you been doing this?

If the question refers to being an entrepreneur, I’d say my entire life. Raking leaves, shoveling a walkway for $1.00 were all jobs I started when I was 9 years old. I was always my dream to be my own boss. Later in life, after getting a degree in visual communications (a fancy name for a graphic designer), I would freelance for various companies under the name “Glen Halliday Design” designing logos, collateral, websites, and so on. My current company, Kids Crooked House,  is a great mix of everything I love. I get to be very creative, work with my hands and build, but also surround myself with people I enjoy working with.

How did you get the idea to do it?

Like most success stories, Kids Crooked House happened Read the rest of this entry »

DECIDE WHAT YOUR OVERRIDING DREAM OR GOAL IS.

EXAMINE HOW YOU CAN TRIM YOUR SPENDING.

USE THE 3 TIERED METHOD TO ALLOCATE YOUR MONEY:

  • First PAY THE GOTTA’S: MORTGAGE, INSURANCE, UTILITIES, MINIMUM DEBT PAYMENTS, CAR PAYMENTS, MEDICAL, CHARITY.
  • Second PAY YOUR DREAM: MAKE AN EXTRA PAYMENT ON A CREDIT CARD, START SAVING FOR A DOWN PAYMENT ON LAND YOU WANT TO BUY….
  • Third LIVE ON WHAT’S LEFT: GROCERIES, DINING OUT, CLOTHES, ENTERTAINMENT, ETC.

Sounds wonderful but it may Read the rest of this entry »

How to Find a Job

When you lose your job it can be devastating. It’s as if we lose ourselves. But taking a new look as the experience as merely a bridge to something else, something new can be a godsend.

Being unemployed can be overwhelming. We frequently want to unplug the phone, pull down the blinds, and watch television until our eyes fall out. That’s not the answer. Decide what is the MOST important to do that day, like:

  • Get an interview
  • Meet new people
  • Make $50
  • Laugh

Do Traditional Things to Get a Job:

  • Register with employment agencies
  • Post your resume on online services
  • Spiff up your resume and interview skills by practicing with everyone who will listen to you (standing in line at the grocery store, walk into a store and stick the resume in the owner’s nose to ask him/her what does he/she think of it?) (Of course when you go for a specific job you will need to tailor your resume for that position and company.)
  • Take an interim job that will just bring in some money and help you survive. ( see our story: Guarding Gloves.)
  • Join professional groups related to your field and go to every function with business cards in hand!

Not so Traditional Things that will have tremendous impact: Remember that 70-80% of jobs are not advertised. In this case it’s all about being there. For example:

“Who needs job fairs when you have children’s birthday parties?

I was just trying to wipe icing off of my 2-year-old’s face and there he was: the next person I needed to hire. In about two sentences, he went from “M’s dad” to the writer for a project I am working on. I hadn’t even gotten around to placing a job ad yet. Now, with any luck, I won’t have to.” SmartBlogonWorkforce

  • Offer to do things free for your neighbors (I’ve been laid off, I have Saturday afternoon free if you need help with your deck, or with the baby….)
  • Volunteer like crazy. bigstockphoto_Party_23585Not only will you feel great but you will be making fantastic contacts and learning new skills. Contact the United Way to see who needs volunteers. Try to choose small to mid-sized organizations. If you choose the really large groups, like your local children’s hospital, the opportunities to get next to people of influence will be limited.

More Money: I Think I Can’t, I Think I Can’t…

I’ve been watching Joe Vitale’s series on the Awakened Millionaire and this last one really hit home for me.

It’s not new information for me but I hadn’t thought about it for a long time.

It was all about the subconscious and how it affects everything we do.

You see the subconscious mind is busy. It is estimated that it sends your conscious mind about 50,000 messages a day. Wow! That’s about 34 messages per minute.

The subconscious mind needs a hobby.

Unfortunately the subconscious mind is a bit of a worry wort and it tends to hold onto memories and messages for a very long time. AND, it can, with great efficiency, torpedo all of your hard work toward your life goals and dreams. (I told you it needed a hobby.)

This is how it works for me. I’m working on developing a product (that I’m really excited about) that I will (I almost wrote “want” but decided “will” was a more pro-active phrasing) sell on QVC, the famous shopping network.
